Zontians from New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania convened to review the past year in service and work together to chart a course for the future. Fraser is proud that our District raised $11,000 to support the work of Zonta International Foundation. Kudos to Zonta Club of Charles County. Their club members did an amazing job hosting 140 members and guests.

Zonta International Liaison and Director Susanne von Bassewitz, of Dusseldorf Germany attended the ZI District 3 Conference. She notes, “Membership retention, development and growth at the local club level are essential today and vital to the organization’s ability to influence the status of women in the future.” Accordingly, the theme of this year’s conference was “Treasures of Zonta, Charting a Course for the Future” which signals our shared commitment to growing the organization. Increasing district 3’s membership and spotlighting the significant advocacy and service work Zonta International does around the world is our collective challenge.

We interview three treasures of Zonta:
Vicki Jones, President of Zonta Club of Baltimore ( Area 3), who shares with us her Zonta club's service project: members of Baltimore's club have started an innovative journal writing and theater program working primarily with women who attend Project PLASE- a transitional housing program for people lacking ample shelter and employment.
Mona Rowe President of Zonta Club of Peconic Bay chimes in about her club's members who are part of the large scientific community there. Mona tells of her clubs work to bridge the digital divide by running computing workshops at their local library. Sonya Phillips is the President of the Zonta Club of Hampton Roads and she lets us know how her club members roll up their sleeves to provide service to a local battered women's shelter in her community.

We remind listeners to visit the www.Zonta.org website now to learn about our important Amelia Earhart Fellowship applications due in November and we talk about two time winner Ria Pavnish Malhan Amelia Earhart Fellow 2010, and 2011
Don't miss it!

We Need Women to Run

Watch this PBS To The Contrary clip. The stakes are high for all women workers, and this is not an issue that we can afford to continue to sweep under the rug.

Our spotlight is cast on Zonta International District 14. We are inspired by the Public Relations and Communications chair for D14 Ursula Werner, who wrote to us and let us know about the sale of Zonta for Japan stamps started by the Zonta Club of Bad Vibel (Zonta Clubtreffen imBad Vilbeler Golfclub Lindenhof e.V.Lindenhof, 61118 Bad Vilbel ) for 5 euros you can purchase these stamps and proceeds will benefit the Zonta Clubs in Japan. Ursula encourages us to visit their D14 website http://www.zonta-district14.org/, to find out more about this colorful district- which we did, thanks to Google Translator we understood!

Werner's Club Garmisch-Partenkirchen just celebrated the 50th anniversary of its charter. Especially interesting is Zonta Club of Bad Kissingen- Schweinfurt's innovative Friday afternoon 'Mädchen - Mädels – Girls' Program. Zonta members volunteer for 3 hours each week to mentor and provide interesting workshops on health and wellness, career exploration, and finance for girls age 12-16. http://www.zonta-kg-sw.de/ We hope to have them on the air soon.

We round up Joy Orlich who speaks us live from Reno Nevada, reno@zontadistrict9.org where she is co-chairing the Zonta North-American Inter-District Meeting at the Atlantis Casino Resort set to start June 3-5th . Joy and I talk about this year's theme: Building a Better Zonta, and what the club means to each of us. How important is it for Zonta to reach new audiences? Its do or die...

Don't miss it!

Zonta Radio:Human Trafficking Report and a Call to Action

ZWCR commemorates International May Day 2011 by talking about labor, women's work and human trafficking. Human Trafficking involves the act of recruiting, transporting, transfering, harboring or receiving a person through a use of force, coercion or other means, for the purpose of exploiting them.

Zonta International identifies human trafficking as a global issue and has developed programs to increase awareness and advocate for legislation at local levels across its membership. At the 56th Zonta International Convention in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2002 , members adopted UN Protocol A/RES/55/25 and resolved to support the ratification of the resolution to eradicate trafficking in persons. Clubs across the globe work diligently to leverage support for legislation and take action in their communities.

On Zonta Women's Community Radio we speak on the air with Shelby French, Executive Director of the International Organization for Adolescents http://www.iofa.org/ in Chicago about their work creating Taskforces to eradicate trafficking on the local level. IOFA launches partnerships between law enforcement, community organizations, and social service agencies to combat human trafficking.

What can you do NOW? We review this years platform: that the culture of militancy and military action provides the platform and creates the social environment that allows gender violence to persist. The Center for Global Women's Leadership http://www.16dayscwgl.rutgers.edu/ started this campaign at Rutgers University in 1991 and selected November 25th International Day Against Violence Against Women and December 10th International Human Rights Day as markers for the start and end to this annual 16 day of activism. In truth CGWL works year round on this issue and deserves a tremendous amount of credit for being a catalyst for change on the global level. The number and variety of actions around the globe as a result of their initiative is stunning. Zonta Radio marks this year with poet and actor Mary Jones whose new book Camouflaged Drama finding wholeness through poetic transformations of rhymes speak volumes about surviving violence and Jones' faith you can purchase he book from Barnes and Nobel www.barnesandnobel.com Hope's Door www.northernwestchestershelter.org CarLa Horton tunes in to share good news about a charitable gift from Verizon to support anti-violence education for teens, and we share audio from Avon's Speak Out video where survivors speak out about DV. Don't miss this.

Click Here for Getting our Issues on the Agenda with May Kukiel

Our in studio guest is May Krukiel. May is a psychotherapist of 25 years whose commitment to social justice has led her to specialize in working with survivors of sexual violence. Yet, it is her work to put important issues on the political agenda that brings her to Zonta Women's Community Radio. May discusses with host Roxanne Neilson her efforts to help organize women's groups to make sure that we can be most effective at getting our issues on the political table. Krukiel's team Westchester Women's Agenda works to organize a Women's Cafe that puts leaders representing various women's constituencies together to work on articulating a shared agenda- literally drawing the ideas out on table tops covered by butcher paper. She and her group are planning a Spring 2011 conference.

Click Here for Hard Hatted Women in Green Trades & DV Legislative Update with Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson

Non-traditional Employment for Women (NEW) http://www.new-nyc.org/ was founded in 1978 with unions to bring women into higher paying jobs in the construction trades. Clearly women's participation in leadership roles in corporate governance, and at all levels, positively influence corporate culture and helps business to be more adaptable to the changes in the economy. How companies change and shift organizational priorities is really what piques Dr. Carter's interest http://www.refractivethinker.com/authors.php?author=32 Her research on the workplace and women in leadership roles was supported in part by data she collected as a doctoral candidate interviewing Zonta members. We think that these principals of innovative leadership have implications for our organization at the club level. Dr Carter states, " Zonta members should practice shared mastery in their clubs; ask each new member what their professional goals are and what their goals for the club are, then work together as a club to achieve them" Dr. Carter's mom Shirley Carter is a past president of the Zonta Club of Westchester. http://www.zontawestchesterny.org/

ZWCR reports on passage in New York of landmark legislation : the Domestic Workers bill of rights, which was signed into law by Governor David Paterson on August 24th 2010. Utini Primary School in Kibwezi District Kenya and Ward Elementary School in New Rochelle NY have been paired in a peace project Ms. Kabot initiated to help each understand more about the other. Ms. Kabot talks to ZWCR about the technical challenges of building wells, sustainable and ethical issues in assistance projects and the joy she has found in working to support this international service project.

Bullying has long been considered an unfortunate rite of passage left to children to resolve amongst themselves- until evidence was found that linked bullying to far more grave consequences in student violence. Parents, teachers and community groups all can help by raising awareness and helping children identify strategies to diffuse the situation by employing humor, alerting adults, and establishing strong friendship bonds with their age-mates. Girl Scouts of USA Troop 2981 completed workshops on bullying and, together with Zonta Club of New Rochelle produced their own PSA (public service announcement) which was broadcast world-wide on May 6th on ZWCR. Hurt's 2006 film, Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes explores the billion dollar hip hop industry and illustrates how gender violence is exploited by the music industry for profit. His workshops help communities to better understand and redefine the negative stereotypes, gender violence, and sexism perpetuated in the hip hop media, as he helps young artists to reclaim the powerful idiom of rap music as an instrument of progressive social change. http://www.bhurt.com/

Click HERE for Women, The Election & The Body Politic

New Rochelle's Zonta Women's Community Radio Show aired the day after Senator Obama wins the American Presidential Election. We take a non-partisan look at the American political scene when we ask what part did womens & progressive movements play in this historic event?

How will women make sure that the issues that face us are front and center? What must we take away from this historic moment, and how much of these political outcomes can be seen as a result of the twinned hard work of progressive women's & African American movements from the early abolitionists to suffragettes; and from the civil rights workers to the feminist ideologists?

Should we ensure that women's issues are seen as not merely women's issues but as part of a human rights agenda? Ratification of CEDAW (convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women), Health care, Child care, eradication of poverty, and the eradication of gender violence are big jobs that still require us to organize and work collaboratively in a non-partisan manner.

Our guest, Dr. Roblyn Rawlins, Associate Professor of Sociology, Director of Women Studies Program at College of New Rochelle will help guide our discussion. Dr. Rawlins holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociology from Stony Brook University and a Bachelors’ degree in Urban Studies from Georgia State University. Her research interests revolve around issues of modernity and modern self-identity; motherhood; and women's studies, feminist studies, and sociology of gender and childhood generally.

She has published and presented research on a number of women's issues. Her recent work focuses on how considerations of national identity and gender shape the experiences of women college students travelling and studying abroad.

Our international news features include a story on Rodi Alvarado's case which highlights immigrant domestic violence and women seeking asylum from abuse in their native homes. Today, many of the 68 million wage-earning women in the US have suffered more job losses than men, and women who comprise a large percentage of retirees will suffer signifigant losses going forward.

While we watch the spectacle of the government channeling untold billions of taxpayer dollars into failing Wall Street giants the three pillars of economic support for women- social service safety net, marriage and wages - continue to crumble.

This episode is dedicated to the first professional woman astronomer in America, Maria Mitchell.
